Phagocytosis by macrophages of erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets, and their precursors in bone marrow and other tissues. This is a clinical syndrome than can be associated with a variety of underlying conditions leading to the same characteristic hyperinflammatory phenotype with hypercytokinemia and excessive activation of lymphocytes and macrophages.
